Monistat VS SmashBox Primer
So after learning from Stela that some people have said that Monistat Chaffing Gel can be used as an alternative to SmashBox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, I decided to follow up on this theory by asking my sister who has a background in chemistry and biology.
She was previously involved in the development of a flu vaccine nasal spray called FluMist and worked for MedImmune.
This is before she joined the Peace Corps.
After some proper research, she sent me this email:
The Monistat that people use as a make-up primer is called “Monistat Chafing Gel.” This is NOT the same as the vaginal cream used to treat yeast infections. The chafing gel is essentially a lotion, but with more silicone to create a barrier on top of the skin to reduce irritation if something rubs on it.
The SmashBox foundation primer or any other primers out there uses the same silicone ingredients (usually methicone or other names ending in -cone).
Silicon comes in many forms, but methicone is normally used in cosmetics, lotions, shampoos, etc… In terms of skincare, the silicone will sit on top of the skin or fill in the fine lines to give the illusion of smoother skin. This does not mean it will reduce wrinkles…just a temporary fix until it’s washed off. This can also fill in the large pores, again, giving the illusion of smoother skin. Silicon will block pores keeping in moisture, but at the same time keeping in any other debris inside the pores. So when you put on foundation, it will sit on top of the silicon as oppose to being absorbed into the skin.
So there you have it! An expert opinion… Monistat Chafing Gel can indeed be used as a substitute for any foundation primer. This is a safe alternative, as the Chafing Gel does not have any antibiotic ingredients made specifically for your vagina. Please do not confuse this with the regular Monistat product used to treat yeast infections.
And I assume that your SmashBox foundation primer can also be used down there to relieve any chafing experiences you might be having – that is if you don’t have any Monistat Chafing Gel handy! Hehe.

Good to know! haha, I love Smashbox foundation primer but I would probably die if I ever spent so much on a product I didn’t use every day… I’m just too lazy for that.

Yep, its true! I’ve used Monistat Chaffing Gel for over a year now and i STILL have plenty left. I’ve tried tons of primers before but Smashbox worked the best for me; however, the price simply did not. Did some research and it lead me to the Monistat Chaffing Gel. At first i was extremely skeptical, but I bought it for like $7 bucks and the texture was exactly the same

Hurray! I’m buying the Monistat Chaffing Gel.
I heard some people transfer it to a different container so I might do that. I love the primer. I might get some for my Mom too. hehehe

I don’t know. I’m still trying to figure out if the risk is worth it. I’ve been living on the Monistat Chaffing Gel review thread on MUA and the opinions seem pretty split. A lot of people have experienced break outs which I’d like to avoid at all costs … I don’t think I have the balls to try this out just yet. XD!

I read it on the monistat gel cream and it said that it’s not to treat yeast infections. I use it for my face and arm pits today. It says you can even use it on your breast. It’s suppose to be for sensitive skin. I like it and the tube is big so it’ll last me for a while. My skin looks good. This is my my new primer.

After reading this information, I decided to try out the chafing gel. I’ve never before used a primer, but I was thinking I needed to since every foundation I wear ends up getting uneven after a few hours of wear. First of all, it is extremely smooth going on my skin (I use a small sponge) and takes just a few seconds. My skin feels very smooth after applying this. I am now using Smashbox Halo powder as a foundation, and it seemed to go on easier after using the chafing gel as a primer. The main thing I have noticed is that my skin feels more hydrated after using the gel as a primer, even after a full day of wearing makeup. I read the ingredients, and the chafing gel has no parabens, unlike Smashbox’s primer. I have not noticed any blemishes after wearing this gel for over a week now, so I think it’s safe to say it does not cause breakouts. All in all, for under $7, this is a hit with me. Thanks for bringing this information to us gals who appreciate saving our hard-earned money!
