Since my makeup collection has been growing at a near exponential rate recently, I have been looking for ways to keep my cosmetics organized; especially since I’ve been redecorating my room. I googled for answers but didn’t quite find anything that great, except for the humongous and overpriced train cases from Sephora. Well, some of them aren’t that big, but I just think they can be quite an eyesore with their bulk. I may acquire one just for traveling purposes though, because they are pretty convenient.
So after googling, I resorted to youtube; where I usually find the greatest makeup tutorials. Here are some of the great ways I found to store your makeup and keep it all organized:
For Eyeshadow & Blush Palettes:
I very recently started to depot my eyeshadow so that I could consolidate them all in my MAC Eyeshadow Palette. Now when I want to buy more eyeshadow, I can just get the refills from MACCosmetics.com which are cheaper, and a lot easier to add to my palettes. I only have one so far, but I also have the 88 Eyeshadow Palette and the 78 Eyeshadow and Blush Palette from Artistik Cosmetics. When it comes to my bedroom, I really don’t like just having things laying around, so I searched for ways I could store my palettes all together. Here’s a few ways:
DVD Racks and File Organizers
DVD racks are a great and affordable way to keep all your palettes together, but you have to be careful when choosing one, especially if you have different sized palettes. If you only use MAC palettes, than any dvd rack will do because they are approximately the same size as a DVD case. My Artistik palettes are pretty huge though, so when I brought the new DVD tower from Walmart, you can imagine my disappointment when I found that my larger palettes would not fit.

As you can see, the sides of the rack do not allow for anything larger than a DVD Case to fit in each slot. If you find yourself in the same position as me, you need a rack that has a lot of open space around the sides. You can also store your palettes in a desktop file organizer from Staples or Office Depot! These are a little more ideal because they aren’t too big and can hold the bigger palettes easily. Honestly when will I be able to acquire 24 full palettes of eyeshadow to fill up this huge dvd rack I bought? I do find it quite handy to place my flat iron on top of though.
Here are a couple nice DVD racks and file organizers:
For Eyeshadow, Pigments, Blush, Everything.
Nail Polish Rack
I found a lot of interesting ways to organize all the rest of my makeup, like my eyeshadow pots from MAC, Urban Decay, and everywhere else, as well as my blushes and powders. My favorite so far is the nail polish rack. You can buy these at any nail salon supply shop or find one on ebay, and they are really cheap. I found this solution on youtube from two different “makeup gurus.” And I got really excited because I have a lot of random eyeshadows that I can’t de-pot, like from Loreal’s HIP line, and my new MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow Duos that I got free from Audra at work (Thanks!), as well as just some generic brands from CVS. This is also great if you have a lot of MAC pigments.

I need to get some ideas from here. All my makeup is stored in two fisherman tackle boxes that I have sitting in the bottom of the closet. = p
I’m slowly but surely starting to overflow out of my current makeup organizers and these will def be ideas that i will use
The best idea I ever seen was taking a short vase and putting colored sand in instead of water THEN sticking all of my makeup brushes in the sand filled face…its like a Makeup Brush Flower Pot…LOVE IT!
I put my makeup in makeup bags. I don’t have a lot to be storing it on a nail rack. That’s a good idea if my makeup accumlates I will be sure to buy one if that moment comes.
I have approximately 150 MAC eyeshadows. I bought a magnet board and a bunch of small magnets from Michaels craft store. I Krazy Glued the magnets to the back of each eye shadows and hung the magnet board on the wall in my bathroom. I now have all my eyeshadows organized where I can see all of them without taking up any counter space! I just pray we don’t have a big earthquake! lol
Great tips i jus bought a dvd rack for my palletts, i am gonna look for the nail polish rach…Shelly’s comment has me laughing….bout the earthquake..lol
