When Do Girls Start Wearing Makeup?
If you are between the age of 9 and 15… more than likely, you will want to start wearing makeup. Your friends are wearing it and you feel out of place. Maybe you have been thinking about this for some time now, and are afraid to ask your parents. It’s perfectly normal for a tween or teen girl to want to wear makeup, after all, it’s all part of maturing. Rest assured that there is nothing wrong with you. Secretly, your parents probably have been waiting for the day to arrive that you ask for permission to wear makeup. I’m not saying they want you to start wearing makeup, but they know it is coming. Take into account the first time you walk out of your bedroom with makeup applied; your parent’s hearts may skip a beat! Their young daughter has become a beautiful young woman.
How Much Makeup Is Too Much?
After you have obtained permission to wear makeup, the next step is wondering how much is too much for a tween or teen girl. Most girls this age apply thick, vivid black eyeliner and cake on the foundation. This is a no-no. A young tween or teen only needs a tinted moisturizer, mascara, skin-toned eye shadow, blush, and lip-gloss. If you must wear eyeliner, consider a lighter shade like brown or grey. A lighter shade can look more natural looking. Many girls make the mistake of applying too much foundation, and foundation that does not match their skin tone. Have you ever noticed a girl in your class is wearing foundation and her neck is a different color than her face? She applied the wrong color of foundation. The trick of applying makeup is to accentuate your features, not change them.
Tween and Teen Skin Cannot Handle A Lot of Makeup.
You watch TV, you read magazines, you watch movies, and you notice that many teens and adult women have a lot of makeup on. Maybe you want to try to create that smoky-eye look you have been admiring. It’s important to keep in mind that your skin is not ready to handle a lot of makeup. Your hormones are going wild, and breakouts are part of life for many tween and teen girls. Applying a lot of makeup will clog your pores, causing serious breakouts. Instead, using a tinted moisturizer will work in place of thick foundation – it will hydrate your face, and prevent pores from clogging.
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, which sells for $42 at Sephora, is a great tinted moisturizer that’s oil-free and has SPF to protect your skin from the sun. Laura Mercier can be an expensive brand, so if it’s a bit out of your price range (or your parents’), there are plenty of other inexpensive alternatives at your local drug-store.
Mineral makeup is also a great solution for young sensitive skin, because it’s made of natural ingredients. Sephora sells the Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Customizable Get Started Kit for $42, and includes an instructional DVD so you can learn the basics.
What Age Do Most Girls Start Wearing Makeup?
At what age do most girls start wearing makeup? Maybe your friend started when she was nine and you are 14. This is ok. I have researched this, and it really depends on the family. An average age for girls wearing makeup is 12 years-old or 8th grade. Lip-gloss and blush is fine for younger girls, ages 9 to 12. Girls ages 12 to 15 should be able to start experimenting with applying more makeup, but keeping in mind that less is actually more at this age.
For Parents
It’s hard when your baby girl matures and starts wearing makeup. I know this personally, as I am the mother to six, two of them girls. My daughters are 11 years-old and 15 years-old. When your daughter walks out of her bedroom or the bathroom with makeup on her face, your heart may skip a beat. The baby girl who you cuddled is now a mature young woman. When this time comes, you may want to take your daughter to the makeup counter at your local department store so that the makeup artist can help her learn how to apply makeup properly. Most makeup artists will do this for free, so that they can try to sell you their products after your daughter has already fallen in love with them. The makeup artist will also show your daughter what colors look best on her and will match them to her skin tone.

I started wearing lip gloss when I was about 10, and added mascara and a touch of eyeshadow towards the end if high school. It wasn't until college that I even tried foundation, blush, or eyeliner.

I started with translucent power and clear lip gloss at 12 and then added everything else over the years. I'm 29 and I still don't wear foundation, usually just some concealer as needed. I generally use powder, concealer, shadow/liner/mascara, blush or bronzer and until this year I used lip gloss all the time but I'm now experimenting with lip stick. My makeup hasn't changed a lot since I was in my late teens.

I started with mascara in grade nine. Started playing around with eye colours in grade 10-11. Now I'm a makeup artist.

I was not allowed to wear makeup until I was 15...

I didn't wear anything aside from some lightly tinted chapstick until I hit college. I wore it occasionally when I dressed up for something, like senior photos, and going to plays or something else where I needed to dress nicer, but even then it was just some mascara and maybe a little blush/eyeliner applied by my mom.

Not counting lip gloss, I think I started wearing make up around 13 or so. When I was 15 or so was when I actually started to do more with it. I generally don't wear eye shadows too often anymore, however, simply because as a college student, I prefer sleeping. Luckily for me, one of my neighbors is a make-up artist, and once came over and taught me a bunch of techniques with really natural colors long before I got into it. A lot of my usual routine and style is based off of her influences.

I wanna say 14, but more around 15. My dd is 13 and I'm starting to teach her. She only gets to wear it to church, or on special occasions. It's light makeup too.

In high school I got into wearing eyeliner, some concealer and sometimes mascara. I kind of lost intrest in makeup when I got into college, I stopped wearing it mostly for time sake. This summer I really started to get into the idea of makeup, I started watching YouTube and wanting to try higher end brands. I'm a senior in college and for the first time I'm wearing almost a full face every day. I am loving trying new high end brands and searching for my HG products. I have found that I really love makeup and collecting it.

I'm only 18, and I started wearing makeup when I was 14 - which was pretty much the norm for me and my friends (upon entering high school). But now - the majority of girls from my hometown who are in middle school are wearing makeup! And a LOT of it. Not just some lip gloss or a little mascara, heavy foundation, heavy eye liner, etc. Has anyone else noticed this?? It just seems to ridiculous to me, as I was in middle school 6-7 years ago!

I started trying makeup in the fifth grade. My mom got these Yves Rocher samples she didn't want and she'd give them to me. I felt like such a rebel.. Anyway, I stopped when I started getting really bad acne. It had nothing to do with the makeup! that was just the point I decided "Nothing is going to make me look good... Why bother?" I started again about 8 months ago. ^_^

When I was in middle school I would use my allowance to buy the most outrageously looking Wet N' Wild products and put on a ton of them. I had no idea what I actually need or how to take my makeup off. Lots of girls in my school did the same. But as we grow older we learned to put on makeup correctly and tastefully. If I have teenage daughters I would take them makeup shopping and show them how to put on and take off makeup so they don't just pancake on cheap makeup.

I started filling in my brows when I was 12. I had an obsession back then for plucking my ridiculously thin brows, and when my friend pointed them out I was so embarrassed I stole my mom's expensive eyebrow pencil. They didn't look good all, but it was better than having pencil thin brows.

My skin was really bad as a teen, so I started wearing foundation around 14. 24 and holding on strong with make up, but now my skin's clearing up.

I had terrible acne and under-eye circles (they're actually *better* now) around 12 or so and so I wore concealer and powder then. Back then I was less concerned about being "made-up" and more concerned with not looking like a freak!

9th grade, when I was finally allowed to wear makeup in public, I started with smudgy eyeliner and a light foundation. 10th and 11th grade was when I really experimented with my makeup.

I was in 3rd grade when I started sneaking my mom's makeup to play with. Took some to school a few times, usually the brightest red lipstick and the pinkest blush I could find and would put it on in the bathroom and man would I get in trouble! I was obsessed and just could not help myself and I had NO IDEA how expensive makeup was let alone Merle Norman. Now she is always asking for my makeup advice and for me to do her makeup. I start cosmetology school on Monday. :)
